The rimu or red pine is one of New Zealand's most beautiful trees. Its trunk is straight with dark flaking bark. Its branches hang down giving a weeping appearance. Rimu is found in forests around New Zealand and birds are attracted to its small fruits.
Life span is 800-900 years. the heart timber is beautifully grained and was used for house building and furniture.
Early Maori used it for making spears, and the dry branches provided emergency torches. Rimu was also used to make canoes if the more highly prized Kauri and Totara were not available.
There is a native stand of Rimu in Kaikoura - on the Fyffe Palmer bush walk.
