Matai is a slow growing lowland forest tree. Its flowers are yellow, and fruits are bluish-black, and are popular with wood pigeon and kaka in the summer. Its leaves are green on top, and grey-green underneath.
Maturity is reached in 300 -600 years.
Young branches were used to make eelpots as they are flexible but strong.
